Four-time Rally World Champion Juha Kankkunen
Freeride snowmobile rider Joni Maununen
The Arctic Circle. Seven tons of steel. The toughest tires on the market. And the man crazy enough to pull it all off.
19th of February 2015. Highway landing strip in Vuojärvi, approx. 20km from Sodankylä towards Rovaniemi, Finland.
130.165km/h
Whipping seven tons of steel into record-breaking speeds in the extreme conditions of the Arctic Circle is not a job for wussies. We knew we needed a man with the skills and the balls to get the job done. Meet Juha Kankkunen, winner of 23 world rallies and four drivers' world championship titles. The invitation to attempt a world-record proved irresistible.
What better counterpoint to a charging behemoth of a tractor than the nimble snowmobile skills of Joni Maununen? He is no stranger to crazy stunts himself, free-riding impossible terrain in the winter and pulling snowmobile wheelies on a lake during the summer. The only man crazy enough to challenge a tractor-riding Juha Kankkunen.
Joni Maununen rides a powerful 2015 Polaris snowmobile, Pro RMK 800 163" TDS.
Record-breaking speeds require a cutting edge machine. The fourth generation of the T-series by Valtra is the culmination of 60 years of experience in making tractors. The Valtra T Series was selected Machine of the Year 2015 by Terre-net. With excellent visibility and control, the T234 was the perfect choice for our world record run.
