The world record for the fastest side wheelie was set in Finland at the end of August. The new world record was set when Nokian Tyres’ product development, Vianor’s professional pit crew and well-known stunt driver Vesa Kivimäki combined their strengths in order to reach the awesome speed.
When durability matters – the anatomy of a world record
In addition to optimal weather and a skilled driver, reaching top speeds requires a lot from the tyres. This is especially true when two palm-sized patches are the only contact with the road. In order to break the record, the vehicle needed tyres that were as durable as possible.
From farm racing to professional stunt driving: the suitably mad Mr. Kivimäki
Vesa Kivimäki, the professional daredevil from Härmä, took his car to new world record speeds on two wheels. Farm racing, balancing on two wheels and a short visit to the Finnish Rally Championship paved the way for his career in stunt driving and the new world record.
Durability and protection for surprising situations
The sidewall compound that is exceptionally durable and puncture-resistant contains extremely strong aramid fibres. The same material is utilised by the aerospace and defence industries. The aramid fibre strengthens the sidewall rubber to withstand external impacts and pressing against the wheel flange.
