Nokian Tyres invented the world’s first winter tire called “Kelirengas” or “Weather Tire” in 1934. It was specifically designed for trucks to navigate the harsh winters of the North. However, as passenger car traffic began to increase, winter tires were gradually produced for passenger cars, and the name was changed to Hakkapeliitta.
The first tread pattern of the “Kelirengas” proved to be successful, as it remained similar for about twenty years. The innovation laid the foundation for Nokian Tyres’ commitment to safety and performance in severe weather conditions.
The legacy of Hakkapeliitta remains in heavy-duty winter tires
Besides the Hakkapeliitta truck and bus tires, another flagship of Nokian Heavy Tyres is the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta TRI tractor tire, famous for its exceptional grip and durability. While excelling in winter, this Hakkapeliitta TRI proves equally effective as an all-season option, ensuring consistent performance year-round.
Both designed and manufactured in Finland, the Nokian Tyres heavy-duty tires exemplify dedication to quality and innovation. Central to these advancements is the Nokian Heavy Tyres Research and Development Center, located in Nokia, Finland. This state-of-the-art facility enables comprehensive testing and development of tires for various heavy machinery, ensuring that each product upholds the company’s high standards for safety.
Celebrating 90 years since the invention of the winter tire, Nokian Tyres remains a leader in tire innovation, working closely with professional drivers worldwide to develop even better tires.
