The Noktop retreading celebrates its 50th anniversary. Thanks to continuous development, Noktop is still at the forefront of the industry. The design of new tires goes hand in hand with the development of retreads, ensuring the latest technological solutions for retreading. Treads therefore complement Nokian Tyres' range of tires for all kinds of environments, from icy roads to earthmoving work and from city buses to forestry machines.

Retreading is particularly popular in the Nordic countries. In Finland, for example, new and retreaded truck tires are sold in roughly equal quantities, and almost half of the retreads are Nokian Tyres Noktop, developed and manufactured in Finland. At Nokian Tyres, the design of a new truck tire always starts with tread tests, and only when the best version has been selected does the production of the tire itself begin. This ensures that the tread always receives the same technological innovations as the new tire designs.

The Noktop retreading process is developed specifically for the demanding Nordic conditions, which are characterized by harsh winters, plenty of snow and rapidly changing weather. These conditions call for special durability and performance from tires in order to perform reliably throughout the year.

Nokian Tyres launched its first tread in 1975, and the name Noktop was coined as a result of an internal name competition in the early 1980s. Noktop properties have evolved over the years, resulting in improved wear resistance and grip, among other things. New innovations have been developed in areas such as molding and mixing technology. Production technology has also evolved and become more automated.

New tool for calculating the carbon footprint of tires

Nokian Tyres is working with great ambition to reduce its carbon footprint. Tire production inevitably causes carbon dioxide emissions, but these can be significantly reduced. According to a study* conducted by Nokian Tyres and Nordic Offset, the carbon footprint of a tire retreaded with Noktop is about a quarter of that of a new tire. A retreaded tire consumes significantly less oil and raw materials as well as produces less carbon dioxide than a new tire.

This year, Nokian Tyres will also launch a carbon footprint calculator on its website, which will make it possible to accurately calculate the carbon footprint of a retreaded truck tire and compare the result with the carbon footprint of a new tire. This provides real data on emissions rather than averages.

In addition to helping the environment, a retreaded tire saves money because the same tire can be retreaded many times. By retreading, it is possible to achieve the same tread pattern and properties as a new tire at a fraction of the cost.

Made in Finland

Nokian Heavy Tyres' heavy-duty tires, treads and wheels have been awarded the Key Flag symbol and the Design from Finland mark, indicating that the products are manufactured in Finland and that the company has demonstrably invested in Finnish design.
