Testing in a sustainable way
We always want to strive for a better tomorrow. Hakka Ring represents both state-of-the-art testing facility and environmentally friendly construction. The modern test center puts particular emphasis on water protection, environmental diversity and protecting rare bird species.

Water is preserved and recycled
Water is a valued natural resource in Spain. However, the test center has three irrigated tracks which require water throughout the year. To make sure we use the precious water the most efficient way possible, water consumption is controlled in various ways.
The test tracks are irrigated using a flooding irrigation method, which consumes significantly less water than a sprinkler system. The water that does not get evaporated is recovered. In total, we are able to recover over 80% of the water and channel it back to circulation. Hakka Ring has its own water purification plant, from which the water then returns to use. The large water tanks in the area even out the use of water, and during the hottest periods, water use is strictly regulated.

LOCAL BIRDS RECEIVED AN IMPRESSIVE NESTING TOWER
The area around the village of Santa Cruz de la Zarza is uninhabited lowlands, much of which has been used for farming. The roughly 300 hectare area taken by the test center is fenced to keep rabbits and other wildlife from entering the area.
The area is also a home to birdlife, and the hawk and owl populations in the area are highly diverse. In order to protect the birds, we acquired 25 hectares of land just a couple of kilometers from Hakka Ring. There we built a robust, durable nesting tower. Inside the huge building there are stairs to allow ornithologists and members of the local bird protection association to come and observe the birds. In addition, we have signed a three-year agreement with the local environmental organization to support the nesting and reproduction of birds.

Trees, the guayule plant and solar panels support sustainability
When building Hakka Ring less than ten oak trees were cut from the area. We are also planted 60 new ones to replace these in addition to 302 olive trees. Almond trees growing in the area were saved and protected. Near the test center, we participate in cultivating and studying the guayule plant together with the local universities and co-operation partners as one possible source of high-quality natural rubber. The plantation is managed by local farmers.
More than 1 150 solar panels power up the test center to minimize the environmental impact. During daytime, the power generated by the solar panel field is sufficient to cover all energy needed for regular testing activities. To preserve energy, we have also installed white roofs and white roof shades for parked vehicles.
